Vinal Chand and Jiaxin “Iris” Zheng Receive Outstanding Seniors Award in Managerial Economics

June 20, 2023

Congratulations to Vinal Chand and Jiaxin “Iris” Zheng for being named the Outstanding Seniors in Managerial Economics!

The Outstanding Senior Award recognizes an exceptional undergraduate senior in the major who has achieved academic excellence, outstanding leadership activities, and upholds the Principles of Community at UC Davis. Both Chand and Zheng were nominated by Professors Kristin Kiesel and Jeffrey Williams.

Professor Kiesel said of Chand, “Vinal is a hard worker, kind, caring, and very conscientious. I had the pleasure of working with him in his role as vice president of our newly formed Managerial Economics Society, and he and Kara Taylor did an outstanding job getting this club off the ground and creating a sense of belonging for many of our students. During his last quarter at UC Davis, he also took my ARE 136 (Managerial Marketing) class. His responses were always very insightful, and his questions allowed me to clarify key points and continuously think about the way I teach important concepts and approaches. Getting to know Vinal better was truly a pleasure, and I am excited to see what his future holds.”

Of Zheng, Professor Kiesel said, “I feel fortunate to have had Iris as a student. She was curious, fully engaged with the material presented in our classes, and eager to learn, and she quickly drew connections to further her understanding of economics in creative ways. Iris asks very insightful questions, exploring underlying causal relationships of economic variables and observed outcomes. For her Undergraduate Honors Thesis on shipping and supply chain disruptions during the pandemic, she set out to build a theoretical model and run simulations using freight data she collected—a first during my five-year tenure running this program—and a very ambitious undertaking for an undergraduate student. Needless to say, she succeeded! She is a truly outstanding senior, and I can't wait to see what she will do next.”

Both are honored to be recognized for the award and looking forward to building on their experiences as Managerial Economics in their future endeavors.

Vinal, who was a double major in Managerial Economics and Communications, is looking forward to life after UC Davis, “Upon graduation, I will be interning at one of the largest record labels in the world — Interscope Records. I will be helping with digital marketing and with my Managerial Economics degree, I have full confidence that I am extremely prepared for this role!"

Iris will build on her Managerial Economics learning as she furthers her education next year, “After completing my master's degree at UC Berkeley, my plan is to pursue a career in the international supply chain field. The research projects and coursework I have undertaken in Managerial Economics have equipped me with the essential skills and knowledge required for this field, which aligns perfectly with my interests and aspirations."

Congratulations to Vinal and Iris!
