UCD ARE Collaboration with WFP Finds Economic Benefits from Giving Land to Refugees

Feb. 3, 2023

A new study, published in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, finds that providing refugees with agricultural land significantly improves their welfare and self-reliance, while creating positive economic spillovers for host-country communities out to a 15-km radius around a refugee settlement in Uganda. Host-country households benefit significantly from the income spillovers that refugee assistance creates, and host-country agriculture is the largest beneficiary among production sectors. This paper adds to a sparce but growing literature on the costs and benefits of hosting refugees in developing countries, where the vast majority of the world’s refugees are found.

The paper was co-authored by ARE Distinguished Professor Edward Taylor; ARE Ph.D. alumni Heng Zhu at the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), assistant professor Anubhab Gupta at Virginia Tech, and associate professor Mateusz Filipski at the University of Georgia; and Jaakko Valli and Ernesto Gonzales at the WFP.
