Jim Sanchirico and Four UCD ARE Alumni Document Spillovers from Fishery Management in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)

Catch shares are a management tool used worldwide and are typically implemented on a single-fishery basis. Using network analysis and data from the Alaska region, the paper offers empirical evidence that fishing behavior can change outside the targeted catch-share fishery. According to UCD ARE Alumna and Resources for the Future (RFF) Fellow Kailin Kroetz, the results “suggest that managers should consider economic linkages between fisheries and potential spillovers when designing and evaluating management policies such as catch shares.”
The paper’s authors are Kailin Kroetz (RFF Fellow), Matthew N. Reimer (University of Alaska, Anchorage), James N. Sanchirico (University of California, Davis), Daniel K. Lew (NOAA Fisheries – Alaska Fisheries Science Center), and Justine Huetteman (RFF Research Assistant).
