New Video Documents Unique UCD-WFP Collaboration on Kenya’s Home Grown School Meals Program

Nov. 27, 2019

The project, led by ARE Professor J. Edward Taylor, used simulation methods to measure the local-economy impacts of Kenya’s national school meals program. A team of UCD ARE graduate students led a nation-wide data collection effort that gathered detailed information from schools and surrounding households and businesses. The study found that each Kenyan Shilling (KSh) transferred to a beneficiary school generates an additional 1.27 KSh of income in the local economy. UCD graduate students Miki Khanh Doan (featured in the video), Edward Whitney, Anubhab Gupta, and Heng Zhu trained and supervised a team of 24 Kenyan enumerators who carried out the nation-wide survey. The UCD collaboration was funded by a grant from Thai Union Group to the World Food Programme.
