Georgi Gabrielyan: Agricultural Economist at USDA Agricultural Marketing Service Dairy Division

Aug. 15, 2018

Georgi Gabrielyan joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) Dairy Division as an agricultural economist in February 2017. He is expected to earn his UC Davis Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) Ph.D. in 2018. At the AMS Dairy Division, Gabrielyan's tasks include participating in economic modeling of the consequences of domestic and international policies that affect the U.S. dairy industry. In his dissertation, Wine Trade and Economics of Import Duty and Excise Tax Drawbacks, Gabrielyan studies the effects of a 2003 U.S. change to import duty and excise tax drawback policy for table wine by allowing wine produced in the United States to be used as matching eligible exports for "substitution" drawback purposes. The dissertation shows conceptually and empirically how duty drawbacks affected U.S. wine trade patterns, as well as wine and grape prices and quantities in the United States. Gabrielyan's dissertation chair is ARE Distinguished Professor Daniel Sumner. Dissertation committee members include ARE Distinguished Professor Julian Alston, Dr. James Lapsley, and ARE Distinguished Professor Richard Sexton.
