Professor Emeritus Martin Quoted in LA Times about Limited Effects New D'Arrigo Bros. and United Farm Workers Contract May Have on Other Produce Companies

July 10, 2018

Philip Martin—ARE professor emeritus, editor of Migration News and Rural Migration News, and chair of the UC Comparative Immigration & Integration Program—is quoted in a Los Angeles Times article about the effects that a three-year contract between D'Arrigo Bros. and the United Farm Workers may have on the strategies of other produce companies. Although D'Arrigo Bros. and the UFW were at odds with each other for decades, the article explains that this significant contract occurred as both sides seek to relieve economic pressures that threaten their viability, including a diminishing labor force.

"The race in the lettuce fields is between machines and migrant H-2As," Martin is quoted as saying.
