Huang Chen: Assistant Professor at School of Economics and Chow Center for Economic Research at Xiamen University
June 25, 2018
After obtaining a Ph.D. from the UC Davis Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE), Huang Chen will join the School of Economics and Chow Center for Economic Research at Xiamen University in September 2018 as an assistant professor. Huang will teach and research on development economics with particular interests on government policy evaluation, poverty reduction, and agricultural productivity issues. Huang's Ph.D. dissertation is titled Agricultural Risk, Insurance, and Farm Size – Productivity Inverse Relationship. He conceptually models how farmers' farm and non-farm income share variation changes the farmers' agricultural input intensity, resulting in a farm size and productivity inverse-relationship to prevail for uninsured farmers. Furthermore, with insurance scheme, the inverse relationship is mitigated. Empirical panel data from China is employed to test the findings, and generates policy implications for Chinese agricultural land reform. Huang's dissertation co-chairs are ARE Associate Professor Steve Boucher and Professor Michael Carter. Dissertation committee members include Professor Daniel Sumner.
