Saitone Receives Academic Federation Excellence in Research Award

May 8, 2018

Tina Saitone, Cooperative Extension Specialist in the Agricultural and Resource Economics Department, received the 2018 Academic Federation Excellence in Research Award.

Dr. Saitone was honored for her lead role in a study of cost-containment procedures for the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) food assistance program in California. Saitone and co-authors identified $50 million in annual cost savings for the program without impacting participant access. This work captured the attention of other states and other agencies within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which led to multiple grant contracts between UC Davis and the USDA Economic Research Service to extend the WIC cost-containment strategy nationwide.

The Academic Federation Excellence in Research Award recognizes the vital role that Academic Federation researchers play in developing the growing reputation for research at UC Davis, according to the federation. The award is for recent meritorious achievements with significant potential societal impact, and nominees may be at any stage of their career. These achievements may be meritorious publication(s), an innovative approach to a research topic, or significant achievement in acquiring extramural funding for research.
