California Small Farm Conference Report

March 14, 2011

Shermain Hardesty, Cooperative Extension Specialist and Director of the UC Small Farms Program, served on the coordinating committee for The California Small Farm Conference, which was held March 6-8, 2011 in San Jose, California. The annual Small Farm Conference is the state's premier gathering of small farmers, agricultural students, farmers' market managers and others involved in the small farm industry. This three-day educational conference included day-long field courses and on-farm tours; focused workshops; engaging keynote addresses and numerous networking opportunities. Hardesty organized the five Market Track workshops, presented information at a workshop regarding the food safety regulations that farmers who produce processed foods need to comply with, and co-organized one of the Conference's five Field Courses. The 2nd edition of the Small Farm Handbook made its debut at the Conference, which is published by UC Agriculture and Natural Resources. It includes chapters written by ARE CE Specialists Karen Klonsky and Steven Blank, and Emeritus CE Specialist Desmond Jolly, as well as CE Specialist Hardesty.
