Santiago Bucaram Wins the Erika C.H. Meng Scholarship
Aug. 9, 2010
We are happy to announce that Santiago Bucaram is winner of the first annual Erika C.H. Meng Scholarship for Development Policy and Research. Santiago's research addresses a critical development-environment problem: The near collapse of fisheries in the famed Galapagos Islands, which have been placed on the UNESCO List of World Heritage in Danger. The Scholarship will permit Santiago to travel to the Galapagos Islands and build a collaboration with the Charles Darwin Research Station and other environmental policy and research organizations. His plan is to develop a novel bio-economic model to evaluate the effects of different management frameworks, including how policies regulating one fishery can have spillover effects on others around the islands. The scholarship committee concluded that Santiago's research plan is original and well conceived, and it reflects the goals of the scholarship and the biodiversity ideals to which Erika dedicated her short life.
Together with Erika's family, we would like to thank everyone who has given to the Erika C.H. Meng Scholarship fund. Your generous gifts made this fund possible, and your continuing support is vital. We encourage you to share information about the Scholarship with others who may have known Erika or her work, or with those who wish to contribute to support our graduate students. More information about the scholarship and how to contribute to it is available on this website.
